Terence Loves His Books

I found Terence lying on our bed the other evening reading about all the complex statistics regarding each planet in our solar system. When I laid down next to him, he started talking about everything he was reading with me. He came up with some really interesting comments and questions. For example, after he noticed Jupiter's gravity was 2.1 something compared to Earth he started to chuckle. Then he said, "I bet you wouldn't even be able to open your mouth on Jupiter with the gravity being that strong".

When I noticed Pluto wasn't listed in his book, I mentioned that when I was in school we were taught that there were 9 planets in our solar system. He replied confidently, "Yeah, you were taught Pluto was the 9th planet. But then they discovered it's just a mass of ice".

Clements' Entertainment

Just a short update on what has kept us all entertained during the last month or so...

Our big boy Terence is the one with the most changes as he is now on a new, more mature level. Curt and I thought he would love Jurassic Park and we were right, he did! We had to let him watch it alone with the 2 of us and without his sisters. We knew it would be too scary for his sisters but it was just right for him. The 3 of us especially enjoyed watching the 3rd Jurassic Park movie which we hadn't seen before. It actually received great reviews and is a really good movie. We recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it before.

In the evenings, we have started to read Harry Potter and are on the 1st book in the series. He loves it and so do I. I've read most of them already but it's fun to share the story with him...

Mia's new favorite movie is Camp Rock. I've never heard of it before but it was introduced to us by her friend, Keira, back in February. I've downloaded it and Mia loves watching it over and over again. The story is about a teenage girl who goes to a sleep over camp for musicians. It's really cute.

And, she still adores High School Musical. For those of you that don't know, there are now 3 High School Musical movies.

Ali's favorite is still Mamma Mia (the movie). I am so excited about surprising them all with tickets to the live show which is coming to Budapest. All five us are going to see it on April 11th. I'm not sure how or when I will tell them but it'll be great. Curt and I saw it about 8 years ago in London and thought it was fantastic. It'll be great to share it with the kids.

As far as music goes, T still loves Queen. Mia's new favorite is Pink. She also likes Gwen Stefani, Beyonce and Katy Perry and often listens to music in her room. When I go up she is choreographing dances to the songs (often with Ali or a friend). It's really funny and she really gets into it.

On the otherhand, here are a few books that Curt and I are reading. The first three books I have recently read and recommend. Last 2 books - Curt's recent reads.

The Girls' Favorite Books

Every evening at bedtime the kids get to chose books that they'd like read to them. Right now the girls are picking these three repeatedly. They love them and never seem to get tired of them.

The have several of the Fancy Nancy books
The have the first edition called Knuffle Bunny but here the little girl is older so I think they can relate a bit more to her.

This is about a girl learning about fire safety at school. They love the Stop, Drop and Roll.

They also both like Dr. Seuss books and a lot of the Disney classics but currently the above three are being requested most frequently.

Book Recommendations

Two recent books I have read that I really, really enjoyed! Thanks Lisa for recommending Eat, Pray, Love. Thanks Kerry for lending me the book. It was fantastic. And, Jodi Picoult's Nineteen Minutes had be glued. I read it in about 5 days which is really unusual for me as I have little time for reading. I would stay up late into the night as I couldn't put it down!

Books

Recently I discovered a really interesting yet not surprising fact about Americans. While reading the National Geographic's Adventure magazine I discovered that only 14 % of Americans will take at least 2 consecutive weeks off this year. In comparison to the US, employees in France get a required 30 days; in Japan, 10 days and in the US, zero days.

Staying on the subject of reading, just a short update on what we are reading in the Clements' home.

I'm nearly finished with Atonement by Ian McEwan. Before this I read the wonderful Shadows of the Wind. I'd like to next read the hugely talked about Eat, Pray, Love or possibly a Jody Picoult book like 19 minutes which I've been wanting to read for a while.

Curt has just finished reading the classic, Roots.

Ali loves these books: 10 Little Rubber Ducks, Cookie Count and Does an Elephant take a Bath? She really likes anything with animals in it or pop ups. She also likes the cute book called The Potty Book - For Girls. She is trying to use the toilet but is quite slow at getting to it still. She does, however, announce when she has went in her nappy and usually wants to quickly take it off. This is a good sign. I'm waiting until the summer when it will be easier to work on toilet training.

Mia adores all princess books but her favorites are the Fancy Nancy books. She also recently started enjoying The English Roses by Madonna.

Terence loves his science books. Especially the book called, The New Way Things Work. He also loves Stone Soup which is one I hugely recommend! No David is a popular one, not just in Terence's opinion but the girls both love the story too.

However, Terence's most favorite book today is the one that was recently sent to him by Nana (Curt's mom). It's a Civil War book that used to belong to Curt when he was a boy. It was Curt's favorite childhood book and now we are working our way through it with Terence. He loves to hear the stories about the forts and armies. I enjoy reading a few pages to him every night as there is a lot that I have forgotten. I've scanned the cover for you to see:
