Somlo Vineyard

Yesterday morning Curt and I sans kids and sans dogs, drove out to Somlo for one night. The reason for this visit was to sign the documents for 2 vineyards that we have just purchased. Our friends Sue and Peter already own there and have a beautiful home where they have entertained us and our family many, many times. The vineyards that we bought actually used to belong to some other friends of ours so we got it for a great deal.

When we arrived yesterday at about 12:30pm, Sue and Peter had a lovely lunch ready for us. We were laughing at the local cuts of meat. A little meat with your fat...

We hiked up to our new property today. We had been there many times before but it was nice to visit and look at it as ours... These first two photos are of Curt and I in front of one of our properties (one with the little house behind us and one with the view behind us).

Peter had the keys and showed us around. We then hiked up to the very top of the property which backs into a national preserve.

Here is the view from the top looking down on our little house with the valley below.

One of our wine cellars. I grabbed a few bottles of our Italian Reisling

Here is the cellar on the other property.

Above, Peter and Curt assessing the land while I checked out this fabulously huge cherry tree that will be perfect for a tree house.
Our lovely vines

Flowers that are blooming now. The first 3 are in Sue and Peter's garden.

Above is honeysuckle and one of my favorites, Peonies!
Below is a GORGEOUS peony. Love them.

I love irises. This is one of my favorite times in Hungary as they are absolutely gorgeous at this time of year. Above four fotos are all of our new neighbor's garden. Below is in one of our new vineyards.

These below are also on our new property.

Sunday in Somlo

Last weekend we went back to our favorite little get away: Sue and Peter's vineyard in Somlo. We went up with our long time friends, the McGanns, who are back in town from Tampa, FL.
I am starting backwards... On Sunday we went to Veronika's first communion party. As there was a big crowd of us, we opted to skip the early morning church part and instead join them for lunch and the after party celebration. Veronika is the daughter of Laci and Rita who have now become great friends. Their family of 4 (Veronika has an older brother) live in Somlo and take care of the Tatrallyay's and the Neider's (and a few other's) vinyards. They are one of the loveliest families around! Here is our joyful Sunday with them.

The above shots are of the girls (Ali and Mia with their BFF, Keira) all ready to go and the adults, below, all dressed up for the party.

Below is Veronika - neither she or any of her family members speak English so it's great practice for us and the kids.

Food and drinks. Above is Curt with Peter and in the back is Bill and Laci (back right). Below T is with his buddy Liam (10 yrs old) enjoying all the delicious home made Hungarian foods.

Lovely Rita must have cooked for a week. My favorite was her walnut cake (top left). The top right is Rita with me and Kerry.
Curt is always so good at playing with the kids. He played 2-on-2 kick ball with Terence, Liam and Riley (12 1/2 yrs old and in the red above between Curt and T).
A typical well in a Hungarian home's garden. Above right is Peter and Sue.
THEN, Laci pulled out Old Betty. This is what I nicknamed the big red tractor that everyone had a turn riding. The funny part was that instead of just letting everyone have a ride, he set up obstacle courses for each driver to go forward through and then reverse through. The kids did it in 1st gear but the adults had to do it in FULL speed. Very funny for all of us...
T went first and did a great job.

Mia also rocked it and handled it much better than I would have thought. However, the video of her is not working for some reason but I do have the below still shot.

Then, it was Curt's turn. Peter was running to close the gate as Bill drove it prior to Curt and ran into it several times as he couldn't figure out the brake (was required with the clutch). Peter didn't want anyone else making the same mistake. The gate withstood the Old Betty but his car probably wouldn't have... PS Curt managed to avoid hitting the gate...

I love taking our kids up there for old-fashioned fun. No video games, TV, electronics. It was another fantastic weekend in the beautiful Hungarian countryside.

Mia in Somlo

On Friday, shortly after arriving at Peter and Sue's amazing Somlo home, we hiked around the entire Somlohegy (hill) which is about 3 - 4 km. Curt managed to do most of it with Ali on his shoulders - what a man! It was a great, tiring walk that was rewarded with great wine and a chicken bbq afterwards. The kids were champs on the extra long voyage.

As promised, I got some great snaps of Mia with her new adorable short haircut.

She found a walking stick and took the hike seriously

Curt and Peter admiring one of the fab new residences on the hill. On the right, me and Sue in a bed of gorgeous wild irises! Love them in Hungary at this time...

Somlo Horsing Around

As always, we had an amazing time in Somlo at our friends' vineyard this weekend. It was lots of fun with long hikes, wine sipping, barbecuing and just great family bonding time.

This morning before we returned home I walked out to find all 3 kids ganging up on Curt outside in the garden. Captured some of it on video. They love wrestling with him...

More Somlo Shots

We had to take this first photo for our dear friends, Kerry and Bill, who we have went on many road trips with over the years but have always planned and packed very differently from. We all had a laugh with Peter and Sue when we opened up the back to unload our weekend clothes, toys, food, etc. Unlike our expert packers, Kerry and Bill, both Curt and I have the same style of just tossing everything in. Kerry - does this just make you shiver?

Is that a pair of Curt's underwear?

We finally made the hike up to the top of Somlo hegy (an extinct volcano). These photos are from the journey and then from the top.

The look out tower on the right. Then, heading back down.

These are a few more of my fav shots.

Autumn is near.
