Today's After School Play Dates

Today both Mia and Terence had friends come home for a playdate after school. Mia's friend is Emma (see the gum story) and she is Belgian and only speaks French. She is the sweetest, cutest little girl (other than Mia of course) so I am so happy that Mia and her are friends. They speak in French.

Here are the photos of them hiding in Ali's crib. I realized after I took the picture that Mia had some chocolates up there. This is why she has such a funny smile on her face - it's full of chocolates!

After hiding in Ali's crib, they came down to watch a show on TV. As I write this Mia is sound asleep on the sofa and Emma is playing nicely with the magnetic ballerina book from Nana.

Terence's buddy is Harry Singh who he has been friends with and has known since they were 1 year old chubs! They are staying clear of the girls!

Mia's Thoughts of the Day

Mia was quite funny today. We had some mommy and Mia time (aka 'MamaMia' time) today when I took her to the doctor. On the way she was telling me about the bully, Alexis, in her class. Claudia, Mia's teacher is having a really hard time handling this boy and every day Mia comes home complaining about him and how he is hitting her and everyone else. We often see Claudia deep in discussion (almost argument) with the boy's father. I'm not sure their family situation but that is another blog post....

I was asking Mia why she thought this boy was so naughty. Her reply was very simple. She said, 'How am I supposed to know. I am not a boy so I have no idea how a boy thinks.' Good point, I thought! I wish more of us followed this rule and didn't spend so much time trying to figure it out!

A little while later Mia noticed a bunch of birds on a wire and pointed them out to me. She was laughing as she thought they all looked funny all lined up (side note: Ali still calls a bird a 'Nana') along side each other. I asked her what she thought she they were doing and she guessed a birthday party. I asked her how did birds celebrate a birthday and she said, 'How am I supposed to know. I am not a bird and I have no idea how a bird thinks.' That put an end to that conversation!

French School Activity

Every year the French school classes PreK - grade 12 gather in the field across from the school for the Enduro (it means 'race' in English). It's a race that is organized by the grade 12 kids in celebration of their last year - or at least this is what I've gathered with my minimal knowledge of French and the happenings at school! Terence was in the first group to run around the track to American music blasting from the speakers. I remember last year that puzzled Terence and he asked me why they were listening to music in English ;-) Terence was a very serious runner and was huffing and puffing as he had to run for about 5 - 10 minutes (at least 5 times around the track). Parents and teachers were all encouraged to run with the kids. Each class had voted on their clothing color and Terence was excited that blue or 'bleu' won. Mia's class was green or 'vert'.

Terence during his portion of the race and then afterwards.

Mia's teacher Claudia. On the right she is getting the kids warmed up and excited for the race. She was doing 'Go Green Team' cheers in French.

Mia was excited to have her brother and sister's support and company. Poor Ali woke up with a fever today of 101.7 degrees F so she was a bit tired and clingy. This was the only time all morning I put her down. She clung to me all day.

L'Enduro Race at the French School Today

Here are videos from the race today. They are all with the Maternelle (Kindergarten groups). Mia's class was green. She was a bit tired today so rather pouty but her big brother encouraged her and held her hand a lot of the time. He ran with her after he did his run which was around the bigger track and for much, much longer.

Article About Pokemon

Curt found this article in Fortune's Sept 2007 magazine. He's always cutting out articles from newspapers and magazines - either related to work or family. Some of you maybe interested in this one.

Singing Mia

These are hilarious. Somehow during dinner the subject of singing came up. Mia offered us some songs so I decided to grab my camera. Here she is singing 3 songs in 3 languages. However, I understand the Hungarian somewhat and the English completely and I realized that she was obviously making up the songs as she went. Both of these videos have moments where I have trouble following. Regardless, the English one is just priceless. Nana and Papa - you have got to listen! She was completely unprompted!!

March 2007 Shanghai Maglev Ride

Our friends that are visiting indicated that their all time favorite video that they've received is this one of Curt on the Maglev in Shanghai. I thought it'd be fun to share again. What I wrote to many of you in March 2007 is:

The coolest thing about our recent business trip to China was that we had the opportunity to ride the Maglev from Pudong airport in Shanghai to center Pudong near our hotel. Definition of this futurist train is: Magnetic levitation transport, or maglev, is a form of transportation that suspends, guides and propels vehicles via electromagnetic force. There is no engine and it is completely magnetic! This train transports people 30 km (18.6 miles) to/from the airport in just 7 minutes 20 seconds (top speed of 431 km/h or 268 mph, average speed 250 km/h or 150 mph). We were on it for 7 MINUTES! Getting on a train I thought slow and time to read but it was so fast! The video of Curt is so funny... It's him standing under the speedometer which is in each compartment. On each turn the train actually tilted like a motorcycle would...

Another interesting fact was that the cost of a one way journey was 50RMB for economy (they translate it to 'ordinary people') and 100RMB (about 13USD). Then we had to pay another 50 RMB for a taxi from the station to our hotel. Everyone else took a taxi which cost about 600RMB one way! We later found out if we showed our plane ticket they'd give us our economy tickets for 40 RMB instead of 50 RMB.

In addition to the attached video of Curt demonstrating how it felt to go so fast on a train, below are some photos.

You can barely see that the km/h is now at 421.

Mia's School Work

Here are some examples of what Mia is doing in the Moyenne Section at the French School. They seem to do a lot of puzzles where they have to connect dots, draw straight lines or follow patterns like this:

The other main area that they work on is reading, writing and recognizing their names. Mia has known how to write 'Mia' for almost a year but 'Emilia' is a bit harder and new to her. She still seems to pass all the tests with ease.

Ali's New Word

She finally said two words - 3 syllables - today. It was apple juice. She usually prefers calling an apple an 'alma' which is the Hungarian word. She calls all fruit 'alma'. Today Curt asked Terence and Mia if they would like apple juice, pinapple juice or pear juice. Ali said, with deep concentration, 'AAHHHpple djuice'. We were all very excited! She repeated it 3 times!

Terence's School Work

Here are 2 samples of what Terence does in C.P. (1st grade) at the French school.

This is from his mathematics book. He had to fill in the missing numbers then do a connect the dots number game. He didn't do perfectly but he did okay.

This is from his script (cursive) notebook. Every day they make them write out the day of the week, date, month and year. He often runs out of room like he did here with the 2007. Then, they practice a new letter each day. They are working their way through the alphabet. They have to practice the letter in a classmates name (ie Jack).

Etyek on Saturday Afternoon and Evening

Our friends Anne and Sandy return to Budapest. We haven't seen them since we were on their boat in the San Francisco Bay 7 years ago (I was pregnant with Terence). The 4 of us met in Budapest in 1997 and have kept in touch since. They are great friends and we are happy to have them staying with us for 4 nights.

Last night we took them to Hallaszty Vallejo winery in Etyek. It was a great evening filled with excellent food, wine and friends.

By the way, Harry I hope you notice my necklace. I wear it all the time! Thanks!

Mia's Naughty Mouth

Mia was the one who had her mouth washed out with soap. The words she picks up and repeats are awful! Believe it or not she gets it from the French school playground!
