A New World

All the technology available just boggles my mind!! Here the 3 kids are watching a show on Nickelodeon on the laptop. We're in our hotel in Austria, connected to Curt's parent's home TV in Kansas via the Internet - all thanks to Slingbox! How cool is that?!

Clements' Entertainment

Just a short update on what has kept us all entertained during the last month or so...

Our big boy Terence is the one with the most changes as he is now on a new, more mature level. Curt and I thought he would love Jurassic Park and we were right, he did! We had to let him watch it alone with the 2 of us and without his sisters. We knew it would be too scary for his sisters but it was just right for him. The 3 of us especially enjoyed watching the 3rd Jurassic Park movie which we hadn't seen before. It actually received great reviews and is a really good movie. We recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it before.

In the evenings, we have started to read Harry Potter and are on the 1st book in the series. He loves it and so do I. I've read most of them already but it's fun to share the story with him...

Mia's new favorite movie is Camp Rock. I've never heard of it before but it was introduced to us by her friend, Keira, back in February. I've downloaded it and Mia loves watching it over and over again. The story is about a teenage girl who goes to a sleep over camp for musicians. It's really cute.

And, she still adores High School Musical. For those of you that don't know, there are now 3 High School Musical movies.

Ali's favorite is still Mamma Mia (the movie). I am so excited about surprising them all with tickets to the live show which is coming to Budapest. All five us are going to see it on April 11th. I'm not sure how or when I will tell them but it'll be great. Curt and I saw it about 8 years ago in London and thought it was fantastic. It'll be great to share it with the kids.

As far as music goes, T still loves Queen. Mia's new favorite is Pink. She also likes Gwen Stefani, Beyonce and Katy Perry and often listens to music in her room. When I go up she is choreographing dances to the songs (often with Ali or a friend). It's really funny and she really gets into it.

On the otherhand, here are a few books that Curt and I are reading. The first three books I have recently read and recommend. Last 2 books - Curt's recent reads.

My Top Skiers

Love these two snaps of my little skiing pros!

2000 meters

Curt and I decided to start our apres ski / lunch early one day and went straight to the top spot at 2000 m. It was a great day and fun to sit outside. It was a really happening spot and I can imagine it gets quite wild from about 5pm! There's another gondola down into town for the people unable to ski after all the gluhweins and schnapps!

A cold beer was required because we were hot from skiing.

Kaprun, the glacier, across the way.

Above the clouds

There was a tiny little church at the very top. I had just finished mentioning to Curt that I bet people got married in it when a wedding group arrived off the gondola, walked through the bar / restaurant in their proper attire and headed towards the little church. I just managed to get it on video from our table...

Transport to the Gondolla

Our Hotel in Zell am See was right next to the Areitbahn I gondola. It's a 6 person gondola and is easily walkable but with 3 kids and skies and poles, it was better to get a ride on the back of the hotel's ATV with trailer. The driver simply just went back and forth all day. Going down was much easier than coming back up (especially in ski boots after a long day of skiing).

She is always so happy when she's skiing!

Packing & the Ride

Packing is never easy for a skiing trip. So much equipment: 5 sets of skies, 4 sets of poles (Ali doesn't use any yet), 5 sets of boots, helmuts, winter boots, ski clothes, long johns, fleeces, pool clothes (our hotel had 3 pools in it!), etc. We laughed about not being able to fit one more thing into the car. We even had a roof box!

The girls sat in the middle row and T sat in the very back (we had one seat up and one down). They all had their own set of head phones so they could chose to listen to the DVD that was playing on the built in screen; music (either radio or one of the 5 CDs I had in the system) or they could plug it into a game (Mia had her Leapster and T had his Nintendo DS). Curt and I listened to his iPod (mostly podcasts of talk radio which we miss and love) on the speakers.

Mia chose mostly to listen to the new Pink CD that she loves. Her favorite song is Rockstar. I have a funny video of her with her headphones on belting out the words - or what she thought the words were... T also listened a bit to music but spent 1/2 his time watching movies and the other 1/2 playing his Nintendo. Ali slept for about 1 1/2 hours but also watched movies, snacked and watched out the window.

Now that Ali is 3 years old our road trips are much, much easier. We had to do a few side of the road stops for pee breaks but other than that it was pretty smooth sailing! We stopped once for food as they have the best road side restaurants in Austria. There's a chain of these restaurants that have indoor / outdoor playgrounds and are extremely kid friendly. I have the map in the glove box of the car that marks each of their locations. The food is spectacular and very, very fresh! It's self service with 5 types of homemade soups, an amazing salad bar, a fish grill, a meat grill, huge cake section, a juice section with about 8 types of amazing fresh squeezed juices (or combinations of), a coffee section, etc. Curt and I often wonder if these would work in America instead of all the fast food crap that is on the side of the freeways.

Once the sun went down, we all got a kick out of watching the moon and Venus. The evening before (at sunset) it was the closest and clearest but Saturday was also very cool. I took this snap while we were driving.

Without stopping or traffic, the drive from Budapest to Zell am See is about 7 hours.

Our Ski Champions!

As many of you heard by now, Terence won the gold medal in his slalom ski competition. It was a timed race that they did one at a time. Mia was in the same group with Terence and about 10 other kids ranging in age from 6 - 11 yrs old. Mia was one of the youngest and only 1 of 2 girls. The other girl, Viktoria, was from Denmark and also Mia's age. We are thrilled to announce that Mia won silver!!

The race was on the 5th day of ski school and the results were announced at an apres ski party at the ski school on Thursday at 4pm. They left us all in suspense with the results so it was a complete surprise to all of us when they announced the silver went to Mia and the gold went to Terence!

They asked us upon entering the apres ski party whether we preferred the Hungarian or American national anthem if they won. It didn't even occur to me that one of them won gold. I thought they were going to allow each kid a moment in the top position. Well, my answer was obviously the US anthem!! I actually shed a tear during it! I was so proud and it was the first time T had actually come in 1st in anything! The other kids got to stand all over the 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions even though they all came in 3rd place through 10th.

The 2 kids standing behind him on the same platform were both 8 years old (T will only be 8 at the end of this month - he's very tall).

Look at his happy face! He's still walking on a cloud!

Proud parents enjoying a beer! Little Ali there to support her big brother and sister.

He had to pose for about 12 pictures as I could barely see through my proud tears!

Mia was jealous of his gold but about an hour later she realized what she had achieved! She got silver and beat out a 10 and 11 year old boy! She is absolutely amazing on skies. So it T but she is FAST and he only beat her by 1/40th of a second!!

We are BACK in BUDAPEST

We had a great week in beautiful Zell am See, Austria. Skiing like crazy, eating too much and drinking lots of weisbeer and champagne (for the birthday celebration).

The kids skied better than ever, even winning gold and silver in their ski races!!! This is a photo of what they had to wear every day to ski school so they couldn't get lost on the huge hill (2000 m at top).

More photos to come... First, I need to change the loads of laundry!
