March 2007 Shanghai Maglev Ride

Our friends that are visiting indicated that their all time favorite video that they've received is this one of Curt on the Maglev in Shanghai. I thought it'd be fun to share again. What I wrote to many of you in March 2007 is:

The coolest thing about our recent business trip to China was that we had the opportunity to ride the Maglev from Pudong airport in Shanghai to center Pudong near our hotel. Definition of this futurist train is: Magnetic levitation transport, or maglev, is a form of transportation that suspends, guides and propels vehicles via electromagnetic force. There is no engine and it is completely magnetic! This train transports people 30 km (18.6 miles) to/from the airport in just 7 minutes 20 seconds (top speed of 431 km/h or 268 mph, average speed 250 km/h or 150 mph). We were on it for 7 MINUTES! Getting on a train I thought slow and time to read but it was so fast! The video of Curt is so funny... It's him standing under the speedometer which is in each compartment. On each turn the train actually tilted like a motorcycle would...

Another interesting fact was that the cost of a one way journey was 50RMB for economy (they translate it to 'ordinary people') and 100RMB (about 13USD). Then we had to pay another 50 RMB for a taxi from the station to our hotel. Everyone else took a taxi which cost about 600RMB one way! We later found out if we showed our plane ticket they'd give us our economy tickets for 40 RMB instead of 50 RMB.

In addition to the attached video of Curt demonstrating how it felt to go so fast on a train, below are some photos.

You can barely see that the km/h is now at 421.
