Fire Truck at the County Fair

The girls loved the big red fire truck!

Demolition Derby Day

The next night at the fair was a Demolition Derby. Now this was a real cultural experience for us. More so than the rodeo. It seemed the rodeo was more of a family outing whereas the demolition derby was packed with teenagers (many who were pregnant). We were the sore thumbs that stuck out of the crowd, however, we didn't care. Terence thought the demolition derby was very cool. Half broken down, smashed up cars ramming into each other and trying to cause the other cars to permanently break down. The object was to be the last car working. What a sight! Again, videos coming.

Mia had to take a front row look at all this.

Mommy gives the derby a thumbs down and T gives it a thumbs up. Not sure what Mia was looking at.

At the Sedgwick County Fair's Rodeo

Who ever thought that a rodeo would be so much fun!? Yes, I am going back and forth with my posts. We've now been at the beach on Kiawah Island for 2 weeks but I am still playing catch up with our Kansas photos from last month. The rodeo that we took the kids to was so much fun. All of us went - the 5 of us plus Curt's parents, sister Sheila and sister Paula. What a fun experience it was to see these cowboys riding these wild bulls. Here is what we saw (keep in mind that our videos are coming later).

We have seen many signs all over the US like this. This was on the side of the rode on our way to the rodeo.

Kansas is flat - a perfect location for tornadoes.

Out of Touch

We are really having far too much fun in Kiawah, SC.... Everytime I get on the computer to update the blog someone new pops over (we keep getting visitors as friends and family show up) or someone suggests a bike ride, walk over to the beach, tennis match, a beer, a glass of champagne or a Starbucks coffee. None of which I can resist. So I get distracted and pulled away from my laptop.

Last night Curt and I went out sans kids to a bbq. The bbq was hosted by the owner of a US based freight / HHG moving company that Curt has known for years and years. It was funny as the 3 top guys of the company (now based in Charleston) are all Brits but married to American women. It was a fun group at a beautiful home sitting right on one of the marshes (or rivers) off the ocean. Not sure exactly what it was but they do have a dock off their backyard with a great looking boat called Happy Endings. They also had a beautiful pool. Curt and I skipped the pool as we swim all the time, every day and it was nice to go out without chlorine or sand in our hair!

Curt just returned with my coffee and everyone is waking up. Must run as we are going out for an all American breakfast - yum! I'm hoping for a waffle but will settle for a bagel.

I promise to come back to you all soon. With photos (especially from my very cool new Olympus waterproof camera).

Wichita, KS with Aunt Sheila and Aunt Paula

We had a great week in Wichita at Curt's parents lovely home. Even though our 3 kids probably turned their tidy home upside down and made more noise than they are used to on a daily basis, they made us feel very welcome and at home. We found lots of kids' activities to do every day. There are many great water parks, children's museums, a fantastic zoo, a baseball team, etc in Wichita. A very fun city for small ones. We were even lucky to hit a rodeo and a demolition derby! I'll post photos from these 2 events next.
In the meantime, I wanted to send a big thank you and farewell to Curt's 2 sisters Sheila (holding Mia below) and Paula. Thanks for keeping the kids constantly entertained by reading, playing games, watching movies with, etc. They all enjoyed your company so much. We will miss you in Kiawah this summer but hope to see you soon.

First Time on the Diving Board

When I was growing up it seemed every pool had diving boards. I think since I've been living overseas most pools have had them removed. Probably due to the high amount of accidents involved on or around the boards (especially the high dives).

While in Wichita, KS last week, we went to the public pool down the street from Curt's parents home. The kids were over the moon about their diving board. Immediately they were drawn to it even though they have never been on a diving board before. I thought both Terence and Mia would get up on it, chicken out and get off but they both jumped off it confidently. Mia hesitated slightly but Terence didn't. The pool depth they were diving into was about 10 feet deep. I thought that may scare them a little too, but it didn't.

It was really fun to watch them jumping over and over and over again.

I love this one of Mia. It's like she's trying to dive in. What a pose!

In Kiawah

We have made it to Kiawah. Having so much fun that I've had very limited personal computer time. We arrived on Saturday and are enjoying the company of our friends Craig and Tammy and their 4 1/2 month old sweet baby girl, Olivia. Also here is Alexandra's godmother Margaret, her brother, his wife and their 2 1/2 year old.

Even though the weather channel indicates storms in South Carolina, we have had nothing but sunshine.

The kids are loving the beach. Ali has learned all the English beach words very quickly including 'beach' and 'more beach' (after we've left), 'buckets', 'sand', 'shovel', 'waves', 'shells', 'kite', 'castle'. I didn't realize that she wasn't familiar with these words and said most of them in Hungarian. Her English has progressed so much in the 2 weeks we've been here.

This morning we met with GiGi - a full time resident on Kiawah Island who is from France and will be spending 3 days a week (1 1/2 hours each time) with Terence and Mia practicing French. She is lovely. She and her husband are semi-retired and she has started a French catering company in the area. However, she tutors a few children in the French language. So, after Terence and Mia's camp tomorrow they'll be spending 1 1/2 hours with her. I'm thrilled. Terence wasn't so excited at first but after meeting her he is very happy as she is very sweet. Mia's always been pretty open to it as she loves speaking French. The other point that helped seal the deal was that her full name is Genevieve which is the same name as his French tutor in Budapest who he adores. I love when a plan comes together.

Promise to post some photos very soon.

Hope you are all having a great summer.

1 week in Wichita

We are just at the tail end of our 1 week in Wichita, Kansas with Curt's mom and dad. With us during this week were also Curt's 2 sisters Paula and Sheila.

The week was obviously fun-packed as I have had minimal time on the computer. We have been on the go non-stop having so much fun. Baseball games, a rodeo (it was great), a demolition derby (T loved it), lots of bbqs, lots of fun in the sun and visits to the water parks, a date night and more.

The kids officially love America, love being at Nana and Papa's and adore their pooch, Clarence. He made a great substitute for our dogs - mostly Blue - who we miss dearly.

Somehow we were able to skip a visit to Chuck E Cheese even though eagle eye Mia spotted it one day. Will have to hit one while in Virginia in August.

At Curt's Uncle Mike's home back in Kansas City I will post photos. Most excited to share the clips and shots from the rodeo which was a blast. Think I even picked up a bit of a southern drawl while there. And, Mia is hoping for cowboy boots!

Y'all come back now ya hear!

We are in Kansas

We are having a great time in Kansas. Arrived to Kansas City on the 4th of July (happy birthday America). We had a great time staying with Curt's Uncle Mike and Aunt Sally in Overland Park. Overland Park is a great new area in Kansas City. Their home was just perfect for all of us. Every morning, after we all woke, we'd walk over to the nearby Starbucks and grocery store with the kids.

It was so great catching up with family and spending a lot of time with Curt's Aunt Sally, Uncle Mike, Uncle Jim and cousin Julie. These are the family members we saw the most. Also saw, Aunt Mary Margaret, Uncle John, Aunt Karen, Uncle Tim, Aunt Katrina and cousins: Megan, Brad, Ben, Matt (all their wives and kids). Lots of fun in a great city.
Last night we arrived in Wichita after a 3 hour drive with the kids. We are now staying here with Curt's mom and dad. His 2 sisters, Sheila and Paula, are also here. Tonight we are going to a baseball game and eating hotdogs for dinner. The kids love America!
For those of you who may not know where Kansas is, here it is on a map:

Terence and Mia got these on our first day and have been cruising around everywhere on them. They are fast and really good at them. Ali has her little moto.

Terence Cornwall Photos

After surf camp, Terence wandered off by himself to explore a bit. He likes his alone time to explore and contemplate about life and the world. He found this great spot to watch the waves crash in. The funniest is that he sits like this all the time now. I call him Chinese when he does this as I always see the Chinese in China on the side of the roads squatting in this uncomfortable (for me) position.

Curt went out there and they sat and talked for almost an hour. Unfortunately the photo is a bit blurry as it was on my max zoom and from quite a distance away.

Group Photos

These are the few group photos that were taken during the week in Cornwall. Unfortunately, we never got around to organizing a full group photo with everyone. It was only the first day (Monday, June 30th) that we were ALL together. After that, people started going off in different directions: applying for new passports up in London, golfing adventures, boating trips, girls nights out, early departures, etc.
These are some of the girls. Ali, Mia (sisters of course), Harriett holding Tilly (sisters) and Daisy

Many of the kids after breakfast on Wednesday morning (July 2). I thought it was funny that Terence and Mia both did peace signs.

Babysitting Fight

Mia and Ali both adore babies! The strangest thing is that Ali is still pretty much a baby in my eyes, however, when another smaller one is around she turns into such a big girl. Here they are fighting over taking care of (and lifting) baby Leah (1).
Then Terence comes down and scares them all:
