Been Off Line

Our home computer has been getting repaired and we had no back up at home. The only computer access Curt and I had this week has been from the office. It's actually been kind of nice. Our usual evening consists of Curt getting home around 8pm. Sometimes he gets to the kids before they are fast asleep. Other times he just misses them. He'll eat his dinner then get on the computer and work until way past my bedtime. This week we've actually had a great time hanging out, watching movies, etc. I told him this is what it used to be like for our parents. No distractions from all the new electronic devices.

Regardless, that couldn't last for long. We now have a brand new HP laptop that is incredible. We are also getting our desktop back today so we'll be online 100% by the weekend. The kids love the laptop and we quickly got on skype last night to wish Aunt Sheila a happy belated birthday (with full video, sound, etc). For those of you that know me, I'm more of an emailer than a telephoner but to my far away friends let's chat! Maybe I'll even turn the video on but I must admit it doesn't look so nice from my side. It's funny seeing yourself reversed.

Bon weekend to you all. Photos and more updates coming soon.

Saturday in the City

After picking up the kids, we took them first to the movies. We saw the fabulous Mamma Mia! Mia was so excited as we are known as 'Mamma Mia' and always dance to the ABBA song when it comes on like it was written for us. Even though she's never seen the musical, she knew about it as I have been telling her for a while that I wanted to take her to see the musical. Terence was a bit bummed out about having to see a musical but I assured him that he'd enjoy it as he bounced around in my belly when I was at the musical in London with Curt and about 32 weeks pregnant with him. Ali was just happy to go to the movies as she loves going to the movie theater.

They all loved it as did I! Meryl Streep was fabulous! The entire cast was so good and had Mia and me (aka Mamma Mia) mesmerized. Terence and Curt laughed many times throughout the movie and Ali danced about 30% of the time. It was a great family movie! If you haven't seen it then go!

These three ladies together were great in the movie!

After the movies we went downtown to the park and dinner at Vapiano's Italian restaurant. The kids love it there as they can create their pasta or pizza however they like it. Terence ate almost an entire spinach pizza alone while the girls both had Pomodore Mozzarella on penne with extra Parmesan cheese. Curt and I shared a spaghetti agli olio. Yum! The bonus was that Mia ran into one of her classmates, Martin, who was also eating there with his family.

It's no fun just sitting on the swings

Ali's little face in her glass at the restaurant.

While at the playground (it was about 5:30pm) we saw all the police with their police dogs setting up for the planned demonstrations. Below is part of the email I received from the US embassy on Friday:

The three events planned for September 20 are: (1) Hungarian Charta This group will march from Clark Adam Square (Buda side circle at the end of the Chain Bridge) to Kossuth Square (Parliament). The rally's purpose is to voice concern over increased discrimination, racism, and violence against the community. Participants in this event will include PM Gyurcsány, Speaker of Parliament Szili, and Budapest Mayor Demszky. Up to 10,000 persons are expected to participate. The event begins at Clark Adam Square at 1400 hours - the march to Kossuth Square begins at 1500 hours - the event in Kossuth Square until 1730 hours. (2) Roma Community The National Roma Authority is organizing a march from the Olympic park (in Pest just south of the Margit Bridge) to Kossuth Square (Parliament) to protest anti-Roma incidents committed by far right extremist organizations. Up to 5,000 persons are expected to participate. The event will begin at 1300 hours at the Olympic Park - the march to Kossuth Square begins at 1600 hours - events in Kossuth Square until 1800 hours. (3) Jobbik, Youth of 64 Counties, Hungarian National Committee 2006, and the Hungarian Self Defense Movement These groups will protest the Hungarian Government and conduct a tribute to "victims of communism and Roma crimes." This event will be led by several persons who have organized prior anti-government demonstrations that have turned violent. Up to 1,500 persons are expected to participate. This event will begin at Heroes' Square at 1400 hours - the march to Szabadság Square begins at 1700 hours - events in Szabadság Square until 2100 hours.

Iced Latte

After a big party on Friday night, Curt and I slept in on Saturday until.... NOON! I don't think I ever even slept this late while in college!

The kids spent the night at Erika's and she and Fanny took them out on Friday for ice cream and then on Saturday took them to the science museum until we picked them up at 2:30pm. It was so great sleeping in (it was a late party on Friday). Curt greeted me with an amazing giant iced latte! He's become an expert at making them and they are yum-yum-yum!

We got on an iced cafe kick while in the US where they can do it fat-free and without tons of sugar, whipped cream, etc. In Hungary, it's very hard to find a cafe offering it with low fat milk (or fat-free) and without sugar syrup, ice cream and / or whipped cream. Can't do sweet coffee so we now drink our iced lattes at home thanks to my wonderful hubby.

Ali's Ready for the Bus

Had to capture these snaps of my 2 1/2 year old waiting for Marcsi to pull up with the nursery school bus. We've had 3 days of non-stop rain here but she's happy as she loves her rain boots. Why do so many kids love wellies?

Anyhow, the little school encourages kids to bring cuddly animals to keep them company during their nap time. Ali has been on a 'Me wanna bwing aahwl o' dem' - she scoops up as many doodoos (this is want we've been calling them since Mia picked up the word at the French school) she can carry and she waddles out to the bus that picks her up right at our front door.

I love that she gladly wears a baseball cap. I'm hoping she'll be my little tomboy.

8pm in the Clements Home

Kids are all cozied around the fire (the temp here suddenly dropped from 30s C to about 12 degrees Celsius this evening) watching the movie Over the Hedge, eating popcorn and not even thinking yet about bedtime. With school tomorrow (week 3!), I need to get them all showered up and ready for Lundi (Monday) and another long week. Wishing you all a very great week. Check back again soon for more Clements Family photos. Au Revoir.

More Somlo Shots

We had to take this first photo for our dear friends, Kerry and Bill, who we have went on many road trips with over the years but have always planned and packed very differently from. We all had a laugh with Peter and Sue when we opened up the back to unload our weekend clothes, toys, food, etc. Unlike our expert packers, Kerry and Bill, both Curt and I have the same style of just tossing everything in. Kerry - does this just make you shiver?

Is that a pair of Curt's underwear?

We finally made the hike up to the top of Somlo hegy (an extinct volcano). These photos are from the journey and then from the top.

The look out tower on the right. Then, heading back down.

These are a few more of my fav shots.

Mia picking me wild flowers.

Ali admiring the wild flowers in the field.

Autumn is near.

Our bedroom window view at Sue and Peter's.

Just Home from Somlo

After a fun night out on Friday night at our friends' home, we woke up early (but a big foggy) on Saturday and headed to Somlo to Peter and Sue's vineyard. It also happened to be the Somlo Wine Festival weekend so it was a fun-packed weekend. The drive took us under 2 hrs which is good time for us as we've always taken over 2 hours in the past. I think we've had to stop more frequently and we've also always seemed to get on the M1 freeway instead of the M7 like we are supposed. This time we went straight to the M7 and didn't even have to call Peter once to ask 'Where are we? And, which way do we go?'

Here are a few of my favorite shots.
Curt, Laci and Peter. Laci lives in Somlo and helps run Peter and Sue's vineyard.

Here's Sue and Peter with Laci, his wife Rita and their 9 year old daughter Veronika. Mia and Veronika play really well together. Laci and Rita are the nicest people. They were the ones that drove us all the way to the Ajka hospital on our last visit (in June) to get Ali's 3M stitches / tape thing on her eyebrow.

Horse and buggy ride. The 5 of us.

Terence was up in the front chit chatting to the driver about his 2 female horses.

Mia, Ali and Terence showing off their crafts.

Watching the band and waiting for the awards ceremony.

Peter, Laci, son Lacika (on left) and friend Antonia (on right) all checking out Peter's gold and silver certificates for 2 of his wines! Yeah Peter!

Some more fun photos from Somlo:

Ali loves pinching my cheeks. With her daddy.

Mia getting a tattoo with face paints on her leg. T learning how to do archery.

Lots of horses. Mia went for a ride. There's Somlohegy (Somlo hill) behind us. Peter and Sue's home is on the hill.

Mia is Back to Dance

Last week Mia returned to her dance class on Saturday mornings. She's now in the bigger group and has kids from Terence's class (at school) with her so it must be ages 5 - 7 years. She was happy to return - probably mostly because of the attire.

We are growing out her bangs again. She has too pretty of a face to cover it with the bangs...

Thanks McGuigans

for making our visit to Kansas City a fantastic one!!

All of us after dinner at Jake and ? (what's the name of the restaurant we ate at again?) The kids loved it as they got little plates of sliced cheddar cheese, saltines and grapes shortly after we sat down.

Aunt Sally with Aunt Kat

Happy Birthday to Nana!
Nana in between her 2 sisters (Mary and Sally), Kat and Curt's cousin Julie

More McGuigan cousins and their spouses and kids.

Uncle Mike with Blossom. Our troop heading to dinner. The 5 of us walked there with Mike and Blossom.

Thanks Jim for showing us around Kansas City. Don't forget Ali and her giant scoop of ice cream! 2 seconds after this photo was taken her entire scoop fell out of her cone and she said, "Oh Shit"

Ali Counting

As I've mentioned numerous times, Ali was counting and speaking Hungarian really well before our UK / US journey began. After 7 weeks speaking only English, she progressed leaps and bounds. Here she is counting in mid-Aug 2008 (2 years and almost 7 months of age) in the car in Virginia (sorry about the bumpiness).

Can you hear me fighting the giggles at the the last part?

Ali in the Ocean

Our entire family loves the ocean. We enjoy spending our summers in Kiawah Island, South Carolina for several reasons. 1. It's a private beach so it's not overly crowded and much cleaner and safer than a public beach. 2. It has 10 miles of white sand beaches. 3. The ocean is warm, warm, warm. 4. The ocean is relatively safe. Occasionally when a storm is coming or at high tide the waves may get a bit wild but overall they aren't the kind to knock you down and keep you rolling underwater while you say a little prayer. Also, there aren't any hidden dips or valleys under the water for the kids to fall into while walking out. 5. It has fantastic bike paths all over for us to go on long rides with the kids. 6. Camp Kiawah. The kids cannot get enough. Even when friends and family come they still want to go for the day. It's an all-American camp where they learn camp songs, go on treasure and scavenger hunts, tie dye, play tug of war, etc. 7. The food. Great seafood (we especially love the crab cakes). 8. Our favorite restaurant Cassique. 9. A fab spot for catching up with all of our loved ones.

I'll slowly catch you all up on our recent summer holiday photos in Kiawah.

This first set are of little Ali who is not as courageous as she was last summer at the age of 1 1/2 but she did love the sand and playing in the shallow area.

Testing out the boogie board with Dad.

This is what she looks like after she gets salt water in her eyes. Not a happy camper.

Her solution: goggles! Much better.
